Matters of the Heart Series Vol. 1 of 4 - Lack of Love
Todays' Devotional by Mary Hooker - Tseva Clothing Brand's Co-Founder
(This is an excerpt taken from a final exam paper written by Mary Hooker August 29, 2021 for coursework for an Introduction to Biblical Counseling class)
What is known as the first and greatest commandment is 'to love God and love man.' The Scripture even states that if you say you love God but hate your brother, you are a liar and the truth is not in you as stated in 1 John 4:20. It is the lack of love in the immaterial heart that causes a sense of guilt and thus apparently uncaused fear and fleeing.
To grow in love for one’s brother requires a loving relationship with God. Relationship building requires spending time. Spending time requires effort and sacrifice on behalf of the believer to be controlled by the Spirit. If one is not controlled by the Spirit, the love is not perfected. Love is only perfected when self is put aside.
In 1 Corinthians 13, the apostle Paul advises that no matter what gifts, talents or abilities one has, if you do not have love or express love to your brother, those talents, abilities or gifts are worthless. “Faith, hope, and love are the three principal graces, of which charity is the chief. Faith fixes on the divine revelation, and assents to that: hope fastens on future felicity, and waits for that. But love fastens on the divine perfections themselves. These will all shine forth in the most glorious splendors in another world, and there will love be made perfect; there we shall perfectly love God. And there shall we perfectly love one another. When faith and hope are at an end, true charity will burn forever with the brightest flame. Where God is to be seen as he is, and face to face, there charity is in its greatest height---there, and there only, will it be perfected.” (ref 1)
Because of the lack of agape love, our attitudes are singed with guilt, fear and fleeing. All again are matters from the depths of the immaterial heart.
